In all games of chance, there are millions of people that are drawn to that game. And, how to increase their odds of winning is on everyones mind. From Texas Holdem to the Lottery, their aficionados show up to play the game they love. And, they all share one thing in common. They are looking for that winning advantage.

For each of these games, the players can be divided into groups; the vacationer (one time per year), the beginner or novice, the recreational player (once in a while), the student of the game (reads books and studies the game) and the serious player (plays on a regular basis). What sets the serious player apart is that he knows the ins and outs and understands the nuances of their game. The common thread for all serious players is they know how to play the odds. They use this knowledge to gain an advantage.

Let me give you a glimpse into their world. You’re not going to believe this, but I’m going to begin this article by talking about something that you have all seen on TV many times. I’m going to talk about hurricane forecasting. Hurricane forecasting and gambling may seem like strange bedfellows, but actually they have a lot in common. So, what is it? Easy; the Cone of Uncertainty.

You’ve all seen the Cone of Uncertainty spread out from the hurricanes current locations. The most probable path is right down the middle. The less likely storm track is near the the edges. The Cone covers quite a large area and you would think we could do better. But, in spite of all the computing power we have today, the Cone of Uncertainty is the best that weather forecasters can do; they’re playing the odds.

Now, on the Weather Channel and the various news programs, you’ve seen the models depicting the most probable landfall locations, as well as, the storm tracks that are less likely. Let’s try a little experiment. Instead of looking straight down from space at these models, let’s look at them horizontally. Pretend you’re on a ship looking toward shore. Next, draw a graph that shows the most and least likely landfall locations. It would look something like this.

You may recognize this as the infamous Bell-Shaped Curve from statistics and probability. The most likely outcome is the one right down the middle (50) and the least likely outcomes are those located on the fringe to either the right (0-10)or to the left (90-100). The weather forecasters models assure us that landfall will not occur at 0 or 100.

If you were a gambler, how would you take advantage of this information? You might bet that landfall will occur between 30 and 70 because there is a very high probability that the hurricane will do exactly that. Also, a bet that the hurricane would hit between 0 and 30 or 70 to 100, would not be a very good bet because the odds are against you.

In the previous generation, comedians joked about the the weather forecast, but today, thanks to computers, everyone is glued to the TV waiting for the next report. A striking parallel exists for lotto players. Lottery players couldn’t do what they do today without the modern computer and some serious lotto software.

Lottery players use lotto software in the same way the weather forecasters do. For every lottery, a player can create numerous bell shaped curves describing various aspects of a lottery’s performance. Using such curves, the player can make lotto predictions that increase their odds of winning the lotto jackpot by avoiding low probability events. This isn’t magical or mystical nor is it a closely guarded lotto secret.

For the serious lottery player, making lottery predictions is similar to making weather predictions. Based upon the lottery’s history, the lotto player creates what is called, an abbreviated play list that they believe represents the most likely outcome. For instance, the player might create a 30 number play list for a 6 out of 49 lottery.

The goal here is to create a play list that has all six winning numbers in it. This is done by making logical choices based upon information from the historical record. The basic lotto strategy, in its simplest form, is this. The player concentrates his lotto budget on highly probable events to increase their odds of winning the lotto jackpot.
